A machine that handles email well may struggle with a larger model, a newer software release or a demanding render. Track age, memory, graphics capacity and warranty by role. Replace against the project pipeline rather than waiting for a failure during documentation.

Updates arrive at the wrong time

Software minimums are a floor. Autodesk lists 16 GB of RAM for its minimum Revit 2026 configuration, 32 GB for a balanced configuration and 64 GB or more for large, complex models. The same guidance ties each level to typical model size and graphics memory. The source is Autodesk's Revit 2026 system requirements. Graphisoft also scales its Archicad 29 recommendations from 16 GB to 64 GB or more according to project complexity.
Generic purchase
Buy every designer the same current model and hope the specification lasts. This ignores role, file size, rendering demand, mobility, warranty and the timing of major projects.
Architecture purchase

A role based device standard
Define approved builds for general office work, CAD and BIM, mobile design work and high demand rendering. Record the expected life and warranty for each build. Review the standard before a major application upgrade.
Measured network performance
Measure wired, wireless and internet performance where staff work. Autodesk recommends at least 5 Mbps symmetrical bandwidth for Revit Cloud Worksharing and latency below 400 ms to its US East region. Treat that as a minimum reference, then test with the practice's real files and locations.
A controlled change window
Keep graphics drivers, operating systems and major design software on an agreed update schedule. Pilot changes with a small group. Record add-ins and dependencies so a routine patch does not become a studio wide interruption.
Recovery that gets tested

Treat project access as an end to end path
When a shared model feels slow, replacing the workstation first is an expensive guess. Trace the path from the device through the office network and security controls to the storage or cloud service. Capture the time of day, file, location and action that triggered the delay. That evidence narrows the fault much faster than a ticket that says Revit is slow.
Wireless design matters as well. Meeting rooms, review spaces and temporary desks can become dead zones even when reception looks fine near the access point. For cloud collaboration, bandwidth and latency both matter. Graphisoft recommends less than 80 ms latency for BIMcloud SaaS and 50 Mbps symmetrical bandwidth per machine for its recommended tier. Autodesk warns that Revit Cloud model performance varies with the connection and environment. Test the Sydney office and remote work locations rather than relying on the number printed on an internet plan.
Document normal performance before a problem occurs. Record how long a representative model takes to open, synchronise and publish from a standard workstation on the office network. Repeat the same checks after a workstation build, network change or major software update. This creates a practical baseline for support. It also helps the practice separate a local device fault from a wider service issue. If only one workstation slows down, compare its memory use, free storage and network connection with the standard build. If several people see the same delay, investigate the shared network, storage or cloud path first. That approach saves time and avoids replacing hardware that was working as designed.
Security and recovery
Protect project work without blocking the studio
Architecture firms hold client details, commercial correspondence, contracts and project records. The ASD received more than 84,700 cybercrime reports in 2024-25. Its report puts the average self reported loss for a small business cybercrime at $56,600. Those figures do not predict what one practice will lose, but they are a useful reason to treat access and recovery as routine business controls.
Start with named accounts, multifactor authentication and prompt removal of access when someone leaves. Keep administrator rights separate from everyday design work. Document external collaborators and review their access when a project closes. Security controls work better when staff know why a request is blocked and who can approve an exception.
Recovery needs a clear owner and a tested sequence. Decide which systems must return first, where installation files and licence details are kept, and how staff will work while a device is rebuilt.
