Plan the UniFi survey before installation
A business WiFi site survey should answer a practical question before access points are fixed to the ceiling. Will the proposed Ubiquiti UniFi design support the people, devices and work that rely on it in this Sydney office?

Start with UniFi Design Center
UniFi Design Center is Ubiquiti's browser-based planning tool. It can start from an imported floor plan or a new layout. Access points are placed on the plan and the tool simulates wireless coverage and performance before equipment is installed.[1]
The current Design Center also supports a digital twin of the site. A two-dimensional plan can be developed into a three-dimensional environment, while LiDAR scanning on a supported mobile device can capture a space when a reliable digital plan does not exist.[1]
Load the correct floor plan
Use the latest tenancy or fitout plan. Mark walls, doors, meeting rooms, open work areas, storage, kitchens and communication rooms. Add ceiling heights and identify concrete, masonry, metal, glass and dense acoustic materials. Predictive coverage depends on the plan and material assumptions being reasonably accurate.
Scale the plan properly
A plan with the wrong scale produces misleading distances. Confirm it against a known wall length or room width.
Place the proposed UniFi access points
Select the actual UniFi access point models being considered and place them in realistic mounting positions. Ubiquiti publishes different access point types for ceiling, wall, outdoor and higher-density use. The model and mounting orientation affect the predicted result.[4]
Connect the wireless plan to the wired design
A proposed access point position also needs a suitable cable path, Power over Ethernet capacity, switch port and suitable business internet connection. Design Center can visualise port and device relationships and generate installer-ready documentation.[1] Milnsbridge uses this part of the plan to coordinate cabling and mounting requirements with the appropriate trades.

Model the way the office will be used
Coverage is only one part of office WiFi. A meeting room can have a strong signal and still perform poorly when a full room of people joins video calls. The survey needs an expected device and workload profile for each area.
Count active clients by area
Record normal and busy occupancy for meeting rooms, training areas, reception and shared workspaces. Include laptops, mobiles, meeting-room equipment, printers and operational devices. Ubiquiti's current design guidance says client density must be considered alongside coverage, particularly in high-density environments.[4]
Identify the applications that matter
List the work that depends on wireless access. Video meetings, cloud applications, voice, file transfers and mobile workflows can expose different problems. Mark where staff move while using those services and where a dropped session would cause disruption.
Separate staff, guest and device requirements
Decide where visitors need service and which personal or operational devices will connect. The design should support separate wireless networks and appropriate network segmentation. Milnsbridge can align the wireless plan with the wider security policy and managed firewall design rather than adding a guest network after the office opens.
Plan for the bands clients can use
A mixed fleet may include older 2.4 GHz devices, common 5 GHz clients and newer 6 GHz equipment. Ubiquiti notes that channel width and access point density need different treatment in high-density offices, and that client behaviour can affect band selection and roaming.[3][4] The survey should record the actual client mix instead of assuming every device has the same radio capability.

Read the predictive result as a design estimate
Design Center's instant coverage simulation helps compare access point positions before installation.[1] It is valuable, but it remains a model. Walls may contain materials that are missing from the drawings. Furniture, neighbouring networks and building services can change the radio environment.
Use the simulation to identify likely weak areas, excessive overlap and positions that create difficult cable runs. Compare options while the design is still inexpensive to change. Do not treat a coloured heatmap as a guarantee that the finished office will perform correctly.

Measure the real office with WiFiman
WiFiman is Ubiquiti's mobile measurement tool. On a network managed by a UniFi Gateway, its Signal view can track signal strength, throughput, latency and roaming between access points while the technician moves through the office.[2]
On supported LiDAR-equipped mobile devices, WiFiman's Floorplan Mapper records signal strength in different areas and visualises wireless coverage. It can also show how the client roams between access points.[2] This gives the predictive plan a measured check from the finished environment.
Follow normal roaming paths
Walk the routes staff use between desks and meeting rooms while monitoring signal, latency and access point changes. Roaming is ultimately a client decision, which makes a real client test useful. Ubiquiti's tools let the technician see whether a device remains attached to a distant access point or moves cleanly to a closer one.[2][3]
Test the applications people use
Run a real video call or other representative workload in the rooms where it matters. A speed test is useful, but it does not show every issue. Latency, retries, roaming and airtime pressure can affect the experience even when headline download speed looks acceptable.

The survey continues after the access points are installed. UniFi Network provides operational data that a predictive plan cannot know in advance.

Use client data, Airtime Scan and supported scanning radios to investigate weak or unstable connections.[3]

Evaluate interference, client load and airtime pressure when optimising channel assignments.[4] Automation cannot repair poor placement.

The project should show the floor plan, scale, wall assumptions, selected access point models and proposed locations. It should also identify the wired connections and switching requirements that support each access point.
A field-measurement record
The record should capture representative work areas and walking routes. Where the required UniFi Gateway and supported mobile hardware are available, WiFiman can provide mapped signal, latency, throughput and roaming evidence.[2]
An installation brief
The brief should give the cabling and mounting team clear locations, cable routes, switch ports and Power over Ethernet requirements. Any uncertainty that needs an on-site decision should be called out before work starts.
A post-install action list
The final report should separate confirmed results from follow-up work. That may include moving an access point, adjusting radio settings, changing channels, adding capacity or investigating a client-specific issue. The goal is a tested office network, not simply an installation record.

Information to prepare before the survey
Provide the current floor plan, expected desk counts, room capacities and fitout changes. Prepare a device list grouped by work area, including older and specialist equipment. Share the rack location, switches, internet service, available cabling and any office-move deadline.

Questions to ask before approving the design
Ask whether the proposed access points are the models intended for installation. Confirm that the plan is scaled correctly and that essential work areas and wall materials are documented.
Ask how the predictive plan will be validated. The answer should identify the field tool, test locations and post-install checks. If WiFiman Floorplan Mapper is proposed, confirm that the required UniFi Gateway and supported LiDAR device are available.[2]

Can UniFi identify interference after installation

Does strong signal guarantee good WiFi
No. Client density, airtime use, interference, retries and roaming behaviour also affect performance. Ubiquiti's design guidance treats spectrum quality, client behaviour and broadcast or multicast traffic as separate influences on airtime efficiency.[4]
