Windows 7: End of Life

After its initial release in 2009, Windows 7 will no longer be supported after January 14th, 2020. Mainstream support ended in 2015 which meant new features and warranty were stopped. However, after January 14th, 2020, although Windows 7 will still run, there will be no more extended support from Microsoft or security patches (updates) which could leave your computer at risk of cybercrime such as malware or ransomware.

Will my PC stop working?

No, the End of Life status of Windows 7 will not stop your PC from working. However, just because you can keep using Windows 7 doesn’t mean you should.

Should I upgrade to Windows 10?

Here at Milnsbridge, we strongly suggest you get ahead of the curve and upgrade to Windows 10 sooner rather than later. CRN claims Windows 7 is still used by 39% of PC’s worldwide and it’s 3.4x more likely to be targeted for a cybercrime attack. this figure is expected to substantially increase after the End of Life.

Will I Need a Hardware Refresh?

Businesses may need to consider a hardware refresh when they are planning to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Microsoft has stated that it may be problematic trying to upgrade an old PC to Windows 10 as many older PCs may not perform as well with the higher requirements of Windows 10.

For a successful upgrade to Windows 10, Milnsbridge recommends your PC has AT LEAST:

  • 8 GB of RAM
  • 256 GB solid state hard drive
  • i3/i5/i7 Intel Core Processor
