Microsoft Windows 7:- the ticking time bomb

Time is running out for Windows 7 users to upgrade to Windows 10. After almost a decade since its release, Windows 7 will officially reach End of Life status on the 14^th of January 2020 after being in an extended support phase since 2015. This means that Windows 7 won’t receive security updates or patches after this date which leaves your device extremely vulnerable to cyberattacks. Here’s why you should make the jump to Windows 10.

What should I upgrade to Windows 10?

Microsoft will not provide security updates and patches to Windows 7 following the 14th of January 2020. This means that after this date Windows 7 will become a wild west for hackers to exploit unpatched vulnerabilities which allows ransomware to be easily spread. Even though there has been limited support since 2015, Windows 7 is the predominant target and victim of cyberattacks as it’s easier to infiltrate obsolete platforms. Staying with Windows 7 is no longer a choice as you could potentially be putting yourself, your business and your colleagues at risk due to the prominence of spreadable malware and ransomware. By upgrading to Windows 10 you’re future-proofing yourself and your business.

• Windows 7 was the most widely affected Windows operating system during the WannaCry outbreak in 2017. Over 300,000 PCs were affected. 98% of the affected PCs were running Windows 7 whereas only 0.03% of the attacks were on Windows 10 PCs.
• Similarly, the Petya attacks later that year, which used the same exploit as WannaCry, was designed to work against unpatched Windows 7 systems. Windows 10 PCs were largely unaffected.
• 39% of PC users still use Windows 7 and in Q4 of 2017. According to Microsoft, Windows 7 PCs were 7x more likely to encounter ransomware than Windows 10 users.

Cons of Windows 7

• Outdated software causes security deficiencies and is more likely to be targeted by hackers.
• As an outdated operating system, Windows 7 is slower to use than Windows 10.
• Foundational issues that existed in Windows 7 prime usage such as BSoD (blue screen of death) and other arising issues as the software ages.

How to upgrade to Windows 10
